Working in dentistry often feels like a race against the clock, prioritizing volume over connection. You want to make a difference, but administrative burdens and quotas often stand in the way of providing the compassionate, person-first health care you envisioned during dental school. At TrueCare, we believe your career should be defined by the smiles you restore, not the number of patients you see. As a community-focused health center, we empower our providers to build lasting relationships and offer holistic care that transforms lives. Dr. Sheila Love, a Lead Dentist, found that TrueCare offers a unique environment where professional expertise meets genuine community connection.

Discover how she found a professional home that feels like family.

Dr. Sheila Love on What it Means to Restore Smiles and Confidence in San Diego

Love’s experience highlights the profound satisfaction that comes from working in an environment dedicated to health equity. Her story is a testament to the joy found in serving neighbors and the support TrueCare provides to its medical professionals.

“As a dentist with TrueCare, we see infants, young children, teenagers, adults, and older adults. We are there for them for emergencies, and if we cannot handle the scope or the treatment, we have places we can refer them to, and then we follow up to make sure that they have gone to their other offices and appointments. We’re just here to help at the end of the day, and that’s what makes working here so special – giving back,” smiled Dr. Love.

What Do You Like About Working at TrueCare?

Dr. Love gave a simple yet profound reason that she likes working at TrueCare. She said that she likes being a person who can help other people.

“My personal philosophy on providing care to this community is simple – you just always have to do the best that you can. When you do your best and restore their smile, you give them confidence, and that can be life-changing in and of itself,” said Dr. Love.

Beyond the clinical procedures, Dr. Love finds deep purpose in patient education.

She views every appointment as an opportunity to empower individuals with the knowledge they need to maintain their oral health, bridging a critical gap for those who may have never been taught the basics of dental hygiene.

“Education also makes the work more fulfilling. When you teach children and adults how to brush and take care of their own teeth, you’re making an impact that is almost impossible to put into words. It’s amazing how people aren’t taught to take care of their teeth or even their dentures, and I like being the person who can teach them that,” added Dr. Love.

What Does Restoring Smiles Mean at TrueCare?

Revitalizing a patient’s smile is an act of restoring dignity and self-esteem. Dr. Love witnesses firsthand how dental care can reignite a person’s confidence, allowing them to engage with the world joyfully after years of hiding their smile.

“Restoring a person’s smile is really making a difference for that person. People who haven’t smiled in years, you know, you give them new dentures or some new fillings, and you teach them how to smile all over again. When they come back for a check-up, they’re really smiling, and those muscles are working. It’s the best feeling ever,” smiled Dr. Love.

What Does it Mean to Serve Generations of Patients at TrueCare?

TrueCare’s commitment to compassionate health care builds a deep trust that ripples through entire families. Dr. Sheila Love knows she is making a genuine impact when satisfied patients entrust her with the care of their closest relatives, creating a legacy of wellness within the community.

“I feel that I’m making a meaningful difference in this community when people tell me that their sister, mother, brother, son, or daughter will be coming to see me because they’re so happy with what I’ve been doing,” said Dr. Love.

There is a special continuity of care that comes with long tenure at a community health center. Watching patients grow up and eventually bringing in their own children creates a heartwarming cycle of generational health that reinforces the bonds between provider and patient.

“It’s also really meaningful when a patient who I’ve been seeing for 13 or 15 years brings their children to see me. It’s a very good feeling,” said Dr. Love.

What Does it Mean to Serve the Community with TrueCare?

The connection between provider and patient extends well beyond the walls of the exam room. Living and working in the same neighborhoods means Dr. Love often crosses paths with the people she serves, transforming routine errands into joyful reunions that highlight the strength of the TrueCare community.

“It’s been wonderful to serve this community. I was actually out Black Friday shopping, and guess who I saw? One of my patients. We hugged, she introduced me to her daughter, and I introduced her to my sister. We joked around while we were in the long line, and it was wonderful. That’s not the only time I see my patients – I see them everywhere. Sometimes, little kids will run up to me, ‘Dr. Love! Dr. Love! There’s my doctor!” smiled Dr. Love.

These interactions prove that TrueCare providers are viewed as trusted partners and friends rather than distant authority figures.

This rapport allows for personal storytelling and shared life moments, creating a warmth and familiarity that makes the work environment feel incredibly welcoming.

“The way my patients relate to me makes me feel that I’m the right person for the job – they treat me like family, they greet me, and we talk about everything that’s happened since the last time I’ve seen them. I’ve even gotten a kitten from a patient, and he just recently asked how the kitten is doing, and I was like, ‘Well, my old cat hates it, but the good news is that my daughter came over and fell in love with her, and they have the most loving cat now, and she’s so happy,” remembered Dr. Love.

When you work in an atmosphere defined by such strong community ties and mutual respect, the daily grind disappears. Instead of feeling like a job, coming to the health center feels like spending time with a supportive extended family.

“It’s not like being at work. It’s like being with friends and being with family. It’s truly a great place to work every day,” added Dr. Love.

Is There Professional Growth at TrueCare?

TrueCare actively nurtures potential, encouraging team members to step into leadership roles they might not have envisioned for themselves.

The organization fosters a culture of mentorship where colleagues support one another’s expansion, guiding introverts and extroverts alike toward new professional heights.

“The good thing with TrueCare is that they push you to go beyond your scope. I never figured that I would be a lead clinician – I like being in the background. But everyone opens their hearts and their arms, and they guide you,” said Dr. Love.

This commitment to growth is supported by a robust emphasis on continuing education. The organization ensures that every provider has access to the learning opportunities they need to stay at the forefront of dental medicine in a supportive, collaborative environment.

“We’re pushed to take continuing education courses, and everybody is so welcoming. It makes learning and growing easy,” said Dr. Love.

Whether you aspire to administrative leadership or wish to deepen your clinical expertise, TrueCare offers diverse pathways for advancement.

The organization supports your individual career trajectory, ensuring you can flourish in the role that best aligns with your passion and skills.

“TrueCare allows anyone to advance in their career if that’s what they want to do, so if I wanted to be out of the clinic more, there’s always the Dental Director or a position in Operations. But clinical dentistry is my passion, so I’m not going anywhere,” laughed Dr. Love.

Starting a meaningful career in health care can often feel overwhelming, especially when you worry about getting lost in a cold, impersonal system. Many aspiring professionals want to make a tangible difference in their community but struggle to find an organization that actively nurtures their potential. How Does Employee Recognition Work at TrueCare?

TrueCare celebrates the hard work of its team through formal recognition programs. Beyond the daily appreciation, the organization presents specific awards to honor those who exemplify our core values, ensuring that dedication does not go unnoticed.

“My most recent personal milestone was Employee of the Year. I’ve actually gotten it twice since being a TrueCare. I got a certificate and a little plaque, and my team all told me that they voted for me and how happy they were for me,” smiled Josie.

However, recognition at TrueCare goes deeper than a simple trophy on a shelf. The process is designed so that colleagues also share heartfelt testimonials about why a specific team member inspires them, making the honor truly emotional and significant.

“When you get the award, everyone will write a little paragraph about why they voted for you, and I’m such a soppy person that they always make me teary-eyed,” joked Josie.

The true power of these moments, Josie revealed, comes from the shared joy of the people you work with every day. It reinforces the tight-knit bonds that make coming to work feel like spending time with friends who root for your success.

“I think it’s great the company acknowledges you, but it’s especially meaningful coming from the team because it’s more personal,” added Josie.

How Do You Know that TrueCare is the Right Workplace for You?

For many, the surest sign of a healthy workplace is retention. Josie Vargas points to the tenure within her department, where colleagues have dedicated decades to the mission, creating a stable, welcoming energy that feels less like an office and more like a family.

“What has confirmed for me that I’m where I want to be is my longevity with TrueCare. I’m going on eight years this year. And it’s not just me. In my own department, we have members who have been here for ten or even twenty years. Most of the department has been here for over five years, actually. I love that because it does feel like family. As soon as you walk through the doors, you feel that energy,” reflected Josie.

Being part of that long-term journey allows team members to play an active role in the organization’s evolution. When you contribute to that expansion and see positive changes unfold over time, you develop a deep sense of ownership and pride in the collective success.

“TrueCare has been through a lot of growth, and I feel like when you experience that growth with the company, you get invested. It becomes like your baby, and you just enjoy being with the company and watching it grow,” said Josie.

What is Rewarding About Patient Care with TrueCare?

Serving the community as a referral coordinator brings unique challenges, but the outcome makes every effort worthwhile.

Guiding patients through complex health scares and helping them find the right resources transforms anxiety into relief, providing a profound sense of purpose for the support team.

“As a referral coordinator working with our community, it can be challenging, but it is really rewarding. We have patients who come in for what they think is a simple issue that turns into something bigger, and we always get the feedback that we really helped them navigate that stressful situation with confidence – they’re always really grateful,” said Josie.

The gratitude expressed by the people we serve is immediate and infectious. Knowing that your assistance provided peace of mind to a neighbor in need creates simple, joyful moments that fuel the passion for community health care.

“How can you not smile when someone’s saying thank you?” beamed Josie.

What is Special About TrueCare’s Personal Approach?

TrueCare distinguishes itself from massive medical systems by prioritizing holistic, relationship-based care. The team takes the time to recognize familiar faces and honor specific requests, ensuring that patients feel known and valued rather than processed through a system.

“What separates TrueCare from bigger organizations is that we’re more personal with our patients. We develop relationships with them because we see the names come up so commonly. Sometimes, the patients will even request to see specific providers,” said Josie.

This philosophy creates a safe space where patients feel comfortable reaching out for help. By offering direct lines of communication and personal follow-through, team members like Josie ensure that every individual feels like a cherished member of the TrueCare family, elevating the standard of quality care.

“I’ve given patients my direct line, and they’ll call me and follow up on things, and I always make sure to help them out. They’re very grateful; they love it. With bigger organizations, I don’t feel that you can do that because everyone’s just a number. But here, they’re part of the TrueCare family,” added Josie.

“I’ve actually gone through various milestones. I started off as a medical assistant. There was a year when I was Employee of the Year. Each one of those times I was celebrated and knew that I was appreciated here,” smiled Ashley.

What is the Power of Understanding with TrueCare’s Diverse Patients?

TrueCare’s dedication to health equity means providing care that meets people where they are and speaks their language. For patients, being able to communicate with a nurse or provider in their native tongue breaks down barriers and builds trust.

Ashley Perez, as a bilingual provider, shared how her ability to speak Spanish plays a vital role in ensuring this inclusive environment is maintained daily.

“I feel like I fit in at TrueCare because I know that most of our patients come from different backgrounds and ethnicities. While they do speak a lot of different languages, most of our population is Spanish-speaking,” explained Ashley.

This ability to connect instantly transforms the patient experience, shifting it from one of potential anxiety to comfort and confidence. This direct, positive feedback is one of the most rewarding parts of working in a Mission-Driven environment like TrueCare.

“When they see a nurse who speaks their language and can communicate in their language, they feel very happy and comfortable – it puts them at ease. You can see the change in their smile when someone understands them and knows what they’re saying,” beamed Ashley.

What Does it Mean to Treat Patients Like Family at TrueCare?

TrueCare champions a “whole-person care” approach, which goes beyond physical health to include compassion for our communities. Ashley applies this philosophy by treating every person she encounters with the warmth and respect she would give her own loved ones.

This practice aligns perfectly with TrueCare’s core commitment to compassionate care.

“All of the patients who come in, I treat them like family. I treat them all like they’re my mom, my dad, my grandma, my grandpa, or a sibling,” reflected Ashley.

This compassionate approach is crucial because patients often arrive during vulnerable or stressful moments. A warm, understanding demeanor can significantly influence their emotional state and willingness to engage with their health care.

“I think that’s what makes TrueCare so special. You don’t know what the patient is going through when they walk through those doors. They could be going through a vulnerable time, and when you treat them with care, respect, and compassion, they are very thankful. They change their mindset and the way they talk to you. At the end of the visit, usually you’ll see the change and the smile on their face,” smiled Ashley.

How Does TueCare Find Solutions to Help the Community?

At TrueCare, our team members are encouraged to speak up about the needs they see in the communities we serve. Open, transparent communication means that when staff identify a problem, the entire organization mobilizes to find compassionate and immediate solutions.

“I think one thing that has been impactful for Perris that we saw a need for is that staff kept saying that there was a lot of food insecurity right now in our community,” recalled Daisy.

The immediate feedback and collaboration between clinic staff and other TrueCare teams quickly led to concrete action. This process demonstrates how TrueCare empowers its support team to be changemakers, not just employees.

“From that feedback, we actually got together with Community Engagement and created our first in-clinic pantry, so now we have a pantry available to patients so they can get immediate relief while they connect with different resources,” explained Daisy.

Taking direct action to support communities that are too often underserved is what makes working for TrueCare so fulfilling. Knowing that your daily efforts contribute to immediate relief and long-term solutions offers unparalleled professional satisfaction.

“I think all of that brings a lot of meaning. It’s really fulfilling to take all of the feedback that I hear from patients, staff, providers, and try to find different ways to offer solutions to the community,” smiled Daisy.

How Does TrueCare Empower You to Have a Positive Impact in the Community?

The daily impact Daisy sees at the health center confirms she is in the right place, driving her motivation to continue leading her team. These small, frequent moments of gratitude from both patients and staff reinforce TrueCare’s core value of being community-oriented.

“Just seeing the impact I’m making every day at the clinic is incredible, whether it’s staff coming in and letting me know they gave food bags to a patient and how grateful the patient was, or just sharing the stories of how patients are thankful for certain services or the education and resources provided that they never had before,” said Daisy.

These impactful moments serve as a powerful daily reminder of TrueCare’s Mission-Driven purpose and the collective commitment to health equity. It’s this connection to purpose that transforms a job into a career you are proud of.

“It’s those little moments that really encourage me and remind me every day that I’m in the right spot,” said Daisy with pride.

What Does it Mean for TrueCare to Make Patients Feel Welcome?

TrueCare’s commitment to providing a welcoming, high-quality experience is immediately visible to patients the moment they enter one of our health centers.

Attention to detail in the physical environment signals TrueCare is dedicated to providing compassionate care and deep respect for every person who walks through the door.

“We’ve gotten so many comments from our patients that our building is so beautiful and that they’ve never had a facility that accepted their insurance look like this. That’s something we take a lot of pride in at the Perris location,” said Daisy.

Ensuring the facility reflects the high standard of care provided is a key component of TrueCare’s approach to health equity and patient dignity. For Daisy, this small effort creates a massive impact on the patient experience.

“I look around every day to make sure everything looks good. If things are not painted or they need a touch-up, tickets are made. Something like that is really impactful for our patients, and they feel proud coming to our facilities, and we share that pride,” added Daisy.

Does TrueCare Invest in Its Facilities?

For medical professionals like yourself, having access to cutting-edge tools and a clean, modern workspace is essential for job satisfaction and quality of care.

Daisy notes that TrueCare is consistently ahead of the game by ensuring its health centers are equipped with the latest technology.

“Something that I do notice that TrueCare is really ahead of the game in is the investment in their buildings and facilities,” reflected Daisy.

This significant investment in facilities and equipment directly translates into a superior patient experience, reinforcing the feeling that patients are getting the best possible care. For team members, this means they have the resources they need to excel in their roles.

“This goes a long way in terms of making it a great experience for the patient because they feel like they are in a great building and getting the best possible care. They’ve noticed that we have state-of-the-art equipment that they’ve never even seen,” beamed Daisy.

The level of equipment TrueCare provides often exceeds what is available even in some private practices, an observation that makes a strong statement about the nonprofit organization’s commitment to its team and patients.

This is particularly true in specialty fields like dentistry.

“I’ve also gotten feedback from dentists like, ‘Wow, you guys have these dental chairs that you don’t even see in some private offices.’ Things like that let me know that TrueCare is serious about investing in the equipment and facilities,” recalled Daisy.

Are you looking for a fulfilling career on a support team where your organizational skills and dedication directly impact patient care? Do you want a workplace where you can grow professionally while being a vital piece of a mission-driven organization? Meet Marisol Baltazar, or “Mari” for short, the Lead Medical Receptionist (MR) at our Mission Mesa Pediatrics health center. Marisol’s 25-year career with our organization demonstrates how vital the support team is to maintaining the high standard of care for which we are known and what it means to find a professional home where your work truly matters.

Learn how Marisol found purpose in her support team role at TrueCare Mission Mesa, focusing on our culture of growth, integrity, and teamwork.

Marisol Baltazar on Finding Purpose in Health Care Support Jobs at TrueCare

Marisol’s commitment to TrueCare is rooted in her desire to launch a career in health care administration and contribute to a nonprofit organization that prioritizes the community.

Her role ensures that the entire clinic runs smoothly, enabling providers to deliver prompt, compassionate care. If you are looking for a transparent and nurturing workplace environment that empowers our team to grow in their roles within the organization, Marisol’s experience showcases the impact of a dedicated support team member.

Why Did You Join TrueCare?

Marisol reflected on what it was that drew her to the organization initially.

“When I found out TrueCare was hiring, I came and did an internship. I had gone to school to become an MA. I was hired right after my internship as an MA and pediatric referral connector. Then, I had different roles throughout these 25 years,” recalled Marisol.

Throughout her career, Marisol said she has worked in both pediatrics and with adults.

What is it Like Working as an MR at TrueCare?

Marisol’s dedication to accurate and accessible patient data is critical to our mission. As the Lead MR, she is the engine that keeps information flowing seamlessly, directly impacting patient and provider efficiency.

“My job is crucial for the whole team because I’m the first person that the patients come in contact with when they’re checking in, and I’m verifying their insurance or taking copayments. I ensure all patient records are accurate, secure, and accessible to our providers and nurses so they can deliver timely care. I’m basically the person who keeps the information flowing smoothly between the patient, the front desk, and the medical team. It takes a lot of teamwork and attention to detail,” said Baltazar.

Marisol also touched on what, for her, is the most fulfilling part of being on the TrueCare support team – contributing to our mission of removing the traditional barriers to life-changing care that the community we serve often faces.

“The most rewarding part is knowing that even though I’m not hands-on with the patients, my work directly supports the compassionate care they receive. When a provider gets the right record instantly, and a patient gets the help they need, I feel like I made a huge difference. We serve our neighbors, and that feels good,” said Marisol.

She said that working at TrueCare Mission Mesa Pediatrics also means working in a great location.

“I really love this location because of the walks that we do. There are a lot of staff members who walk around here. There is a park close by, but also, when you’re walking down the main street, you’re able to see the palm trees, and sometimes you can even get an ocean view,” smiled Marisol.

Marisol said that, in addition to the stunning location, she also enjoys seeing the difference she makes in the community members.

“Every time I see or come in contact with a patient outside of work, they always come and greet me, and that brings me great joy because they’re able to come and stop and say hi. That means that I have touched somebody and made a difference, and there’s really no better feeling than that – no matter what field you work in. Really, just seeing patients getting better brings me immense joy,” said Marisol.

Marisol’s 25-year journey is a perfect example of the professional growth opportunities at TrueCare. Starting as a Medical Records Clerk and progressing to a leadership role, she has been continuously supported in her professional development.

“I was hired as an MA, and then I moved to being a referral creator and the program resource specialist. From there, when this office opened up the new location, I transferred and became the lead medical receptionist. I started as a basic Medical Records Clerk, and they recognized my attention to detail and commitment. I was promoted to Lead MR five years ago. TrueCare offers constant opportunities for training and development,” said Marisol.

This involvement in daily team communication aligns with TrueCare’s value of transparency and constant communication between management and direct reports through one-to-ones and regular huddles.

“I love that TrueCare always gives the opportunity to those who may not have all the experience they need. We are willing to train anybody as long as they’re teachable, passionate, and willing to learn,” said Marisol.

What is Your Favorite Part of the TrueCare Team Culture?

At TrueCare, the support team is encouraged to bring their complete and authentic selves to work. Marisol notes that this inclusivity fosters a strong sense of belonging that makes the long-term commitment so rewarding.

“I really enjoy working with the people here. It’s incredible. As cliché as it sounds, they have truly become like family; they’re far more than just coworkers or even friends to me. We’ve been there for each other through thick and thin and all kinds of difficult situations. Everyone here has touched my heart in one way or another,” beamed Baltazar.

When asked about her favorite component of our team culture, she was quick to answer.

“My favorite part of the culture is the sense of belonging. We are a diverse team, and everyone is accepted as they are. We share everything, from potlucks to celebrating birthdays. It’s a place where you can genuinely be yourself and feel connected to a larger mission,” said Baltazar.

Baltazar said that this culture starts at the top.

“It starts with leadership. We have this connection with each other because we connect with each other personally and professionally, and we help each other out. We’re there for each other, whether that means helping with a coworker, a family member, a friend, a patient, or whatever,” explained Baltazar.

Outside of TrueCare, Marisol reinforces her commitment to the community by volunteering at a local food bank.

“These kinds of activities reinforce my belief in community and compassion. It’s not just a job motto, it’s how I live. That’s really important if you want to work here. We’re so close because we all have a shared mission – we want to help each other. We have a passion to serve our community that drives that,” said Marisol.

As a dental professional, you can find a career where your focus remains on providing the highest-quality health care. Meet Dr. Richard Romney, Clinical Director for Dentistry at TrueCare. Dr. Romney is the supervisor for the entire dental service line, overseeing roughly 20 dentists. His journey, defined by mission-driven service, spanning two decades as a Navy dentist and 18 years at TrueCare, is a true testament to what it means to find a truly mission-driven home in health care.

For Dr. Romney, the appeal of TrueCare is simple: the ability to provide full-service, top-notch dentistry where clinical decisions are based solely on patient benefit, not insurance coverage or cost. Learn more about what makes TrueCare a unique and fulfilling place to work, directly through Dr. Romney’s experience.

Dr. Richard Romney on Serving with Purpose: Dental Assistant & Hygienist Jobs in San Diego

Dr. Richard Romney’s career path is deeply rooted in service, moving from the military to a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). He notes that both settings share a critical feature that drew him in: a salary-based position where he is not pressured to sell dentistry.

For dental professionals like you, the pressure to sell and base care on coverage and cost can be like a professional toothache, a lingering pang of discomfort that refuses to subside. This is a defining factor in choosing a community health center over a private practice.

“I love being a dentist and being in a salaried position that’s not linked to productivity, how many procedures I do, or selling dentistry. It’s like when I was serving in the military. The government’s paying them, and the government’s paying me, so there was no need to talk about the bill or the price of things. We just did our best with what we had and took care of our community. That’s what makes working at TrueCare special, I think,” said Dr. Romney.

For Dr. Romney, the desire to remove money from the clinical equation allows him to focus entirely on his patients. His main drivers are being mission-driven and doing the most good for the most people.

What is the Most Rewarding Aspect of TrueCare Dentist & Dental Assistant Jobs in San Diego?

Dr. Richard Romney and his team are focused on preventative care, disease control, and maintenance. He said TrueCare has good compensation and employee retention, which he attributes to how fulfilling the work is when you remove financial barriers.

“The financial barrier plays such a huge role in everything. A lot of people will elect to avoid getting the care they need because they don’t think they can afford it or they don’t have the information to understand how important it is. This results in a larger bill down the line. So, being able to remove that barrier is incredibly meaningful work – you’re making essential health care affordable and eliminating the cost of future, intensive dental work. I worked in the private sector for about a year and a half, and I really disliked the aspect of selling dentistry or convincing people to upgrade or choose more expensive options. It’s really rewarding to take money out of the equation and have the patient involved in that decision-making so that we can do the best we can for them,” said Dr. Romney.

TrueCare maintains high standards, offering top-notch facilities, equipment, and people, ensuring a “real office” experience that is comparable to any private setting. The reward comes from the ability to provide care where it’s needed most.

Dr. Romney shared that some patients are surprised by the high quality of care they receive, expecting less from a community clinic.

“They’re treated just as well as if it were a private office. It’s not like it’s a step down to come to the community clinic at TrueCare. We have the facilities, equipment, and people to provide top-notch service, and we don’t base what we do on insurance. I don’t have to drive my clinical decision-making based on ‘this is covered, that’s not covered,’ but more ‘this is what could benefit you as a patient,'” said Dr. Romney.

This dedication to quality extends to patient education, helping people understand their options and the importance of preventive care, which can save them thousands of dollars in the long run. He also likes the mission-driven approach because of his military background.

“I just love working here because I get to be a part of a bigger mission, like when I was in the military. It really gives what you do more meaning,” said Dr. Romney.

How Does TrueCare Support Teamwork in Dental Careers?

TrueCare’s dental service line is designed to foster a culture of teamwork and collaboration. Unlike solo private practice, Dr. Richard Romney said he appreciates having colleagues to collaborate with and reach out to immensely.

“The great thing about TrueCare is you’ll always have a colleague who is more than happy to help you out, so you’re never alone, like you often are in a private practice. It’s a really nice and supportive environment for collaboration,” said Dr. Romney.

The dental team works together to ensure patients receive seamless care:

  • Collaboration: Dentists meet four times monthly for updates, continuing education, and case discussions.
  • Quality over Speed: The organization values quality over speed and avoids “bean counts,” utilizing a peer review system where dentists review each other’s work.
  • Patient-First Mindset: The emphasis is that patients belong to TrueCare, not just one provider. This peer accountability ensures that if a provider is away, a colleague can easily step in, understanding the patient’s planned care.

“The teamwork and collaboration are things that to me are appealing. You won’t be on your own, so it’s not a situation where the buck stops with you and you have no one else to ask. You’ll always have colleagues you can reach out to. Even if they don’t work in the dental department, they’ll be more than willing to help,” said Dr. Romney.

What Makes You A Good Fit for Dental Assistant and Dental Hygienist Jobs at TrueCare?

Dr. Richard Romney is actively looking for committed team members, specifically for dental assistant and dental hygienist jobs. The qualities he seeks are rooted in the overall TrueCare philosophy of whole-person care.

“You really have to understand how everything’s interconnected and the role your care is playing in the bigger picture. For example, there are links between gum disease and heart problems. Having a commitment to overall patient well-being is really important to succeed here, not just focused on the teeth or gums, but the whole person. TrueCare is whole person care, and that’s why we are so focused on collaborating with one another,” explained Dr. Romney.

Dr. Romney emphasized the importance of teamwork and efficiency, ensuring all team members are working at the top of their license or skill.

For dental assistants, this includes the possibility of moving up to a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) designation, a path TrueCare supports for new hires.

“We’ve hired RDAs who have graduated from their program or school but haven’t gotten their license yet, and in those cases, we’ll assist them in getting their experience going so that they can prepare to finish,” explained Dr. Romney.

What is the Culture of Support Like at TrueCare?

For Dr. Romney, the ultimate reward transcends money; it’s the human connection and the generational continuity of care he witnesses.

“People come to us anxious. Maybe they’re in pain, or maybe they’re just uncertain about what’s going to happen. Being able to approach them in a patient-centered way, meet them where they’re at, explain things in a way they can understand and in their language of choice, with interpretation or a fluent provider, is life-changing. It makes them feel appreciated and relieved, and they leave with a smile – they treat you like you’re their new best friend. It’s an incredible feeling. That human connection is really the reward for me,” said Dr. Romney.

Like many of our providers, Dr. Romney loves that he has been with TrueCare long enough to see siblings and children of former patients coming in, creating a special bond with families as a multi-generational steward of health that is deeply gratifying.

This environment of service and support is particularly appealing to those transitioning from military service, where a similar sense of collective mission is prioritized over individual profit.

“I just like that we can be honest, straightforward, and explain the options. I just want to be a dentist who works in a system that is set up in a way that supports me doing good dentistry without having to talk patients into things they can’t afford or don’t understand, and that’s the beauty of working at TrueCare – that’s what we do,” said Dr. Romney.

What Advice Do You Have for Recent Graduates?

For dental professionals fresh out of school, Dr. Romney offers thoughtful advice aimed at accelerating clinical preparedness and building confidence. Unlike medical doctors, dentists are not required to complete a residency.

However, Dr. Romney strongly recommends voluntarily seeking post-graduate year one programs, specifically a General Practice Residency (GPR) or an Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) program.

These one-year programs allow you to rotate through dental specialties and operate primarily in a clinical setting (about 80% of the time) under supervision.

“As soon as you graduate, technically you can start working wherever you find a job, but that doesn’t mean you have the skill set or the speed or the efficiency to hit the ground running. [AEGD] can be a nice way to start your career, to get you started out on a good footing. For anyone who’s in dental school, I would definitely recommend looking up opportunities for AEGD,” said Dr. Romney.

Ultimately, taking this extra year allows you to increase your skill, speed, and efficiency.

Meet the TrueCare Innovators: Tracy Elmer, Chief Innovation Officer

Tracy Elmer is a natural strategist and solution provider, motivated by a passion for problem-solving and a deep love for people. For her, the role is about discovery and creation, empowering the TrueCare team to do their best work without barriers.

“When you’re a Chief Innovation Officer, you’re constantly in creation mode, discovery and opportunity mode, or problem-solving mode. Those are the three gears. So, if you like problem-solving and you love people, it’s like the perfect space,” explained Tracy.

How Does TrueCare Use Technology to Support Providers and Staff?

At TrueCare, every technological investment is made with the intentional goal of enhancing the experience for both the patient and the care team.

“Think about electronic health records and all our supportive technologies. We’re lost if we don’t have the right data to make the right decisions, so that’s my role as CIO. The key is, really, intentionality, which comes naturally to TrueCare because we’re so mission-driven that everything already innately has purpose. Innovation is one of our core values, so it’s just part of our everyday mission and vision,” explained Tracy.

Tracy said that her role as an innovator is to support the team, bottom line. In doing so, they can provide better care to patients.

“A lot of my day-to-day life is just really offering support and making sure everyone who’s here can do their jobs without any barriers. So much of my time is spent with strategy and working with close colleagues to advance that kind of support,” added Tracy.

Ultimately, however, Tracy said that the key is innovating with intention.

“I can’t emphasize it enough. Intentionality is so critical. There are so many cool, shiny objects and tools, but how do we know which one is best for us? That’s what’s really important when we’re considering what technology we want to embrace,” said Tracy.

A prime example is the implementation of the ambient AI listening tool (Abridge). This technology dramatically reduces the cognitive burden on providers by securely listening to patient conversations and drafting clinical notes, allowing providers to focus on the patient.

The result? Reducing clinician burnout, which has been widespread post-pandemic.

“We had providers writing to us for the first time saying, ‘I like this,’ or, ‘If you take this away, I don’t think I will ever come back to work.’ I mean, it was like a love note coming through. I love making our providers’ lives easier,” remembered Tracy.

How Do Team Members Drive TrueCare’s Innovation Strategy?

Innovation at TrueCare is a collaborative team sport, with the voice of the team member, or the internal “customer,” always leading the way. The organization utilizes a shared, two-way governance model that integrates feedback from staff, patients, and the local community.

“Innovation exists to create less friction with the care experience while enhancing the provider experience. What we really benefit from is having such a stronghold in our communities where we serve and those relationships, not just with other providers but the whole of the health care ecosystem and social system. We have a more formal, structured process to get the voice of the community. They call it an Engagement Assessment; it’s like a survey that helps us inform whether those larger trends and industry things are right for us. We also get tons of input through our community outreach program to understand the needs of our communities and patients,” said Tracy when asked about how being a community-first organization helps to drive innovation.

Tracy said that they also gather insight from the patients themselves.

“We have our own patient advisory group at TrueCare, and they provide input and react to our ideas. That way, it’s a two-way dialogue. It’s really important that we have all these different funnels from an ideation perspective,” said Tracy.

Just as importantly, Tracy described the power of partnerships in getting innovative technology, saying that every team member plays a part in creating the trust between organizations and showing that the organization shares the same values.

“The commitment our entire team has to vendors is really important. It’s why they trust us enough to partner with us – we help each other make a difference. We’ve spoken on behalf of companies to advocate for them, and we’ve been on different podcasts and webinars to talk through the value. It’s really just about showing that there’s something in it for us and them. Our team played a huge part in that,” elaborated Tracy.

Tracy said that TrueCare’s processes and check-ins also play a huge role in driving innovation.

“We have structured processes and methods of getting ideas from the team, especially when defining our priorities every year. Much of that comes through our strategic planning process, which commences formally every three years, but we check in every 18 months, and there, you get the voice of the team. Everybody has input. That’s a really easy way to get ideas. As for informal methods, those happen all day and every day. People are always sharing ideas with me in the hallways. I love it, and it really comes down to having open communication and being approachable,” reflected Tracy.

From formal strategic planning processes to informal daily check-ins, TrueCare ensures every perspective is heard. This open-door policy allows providers and staff to directly influence the adoption of new tools and processes.

“We have governance groups where we’re structured in a way where we have folks who are doing the work, who are on the front lines and in the middle of the workflows, who are giving us the ideas. I’m a partner to all, and my job is to understand what solutions exist. There’s not a day that goes by that someone isn’t providing some idea. That’s what we mean when we say it’s a core value. We live and breathe innovation every day,” said Tracy.

Tracy said they also have surveys that they use to gather feedback and ideas from the team.

“Every year, we do surveys to measure employee engagement, and we take them very seriously and review the answers. That’s one valuable way that we get ideas. But nothing replaces face time and collaboration, so Dr. Russell also hosts quarterly town halls with the providers in which we’re invited to participate. You get a direct audience of all providers to say, ‘Here’s what we’re thinking, here are the ways we want to help, and does that resonate?’ It’s a very shared, collaborative decision-making approach,” said Tracy.

What Opportunities Are There for Professional Growth and Upskilling at TrueCare?

TrueCare views its commitment to innovation as a continuous investment in its workforce, saying that it encourages networking as a great way to learn from professionals.

“Our employees at TrueCare do a lot of networking. It happens in a lot of different ways. Some of us are part of our own professional bodies, and a lot of our team goes out and speaks on behalf of TrueCare to their respective groups. Take Cheryl Peterson Pine, our CFO, for example. She’s been speaking at a lot of different groups. We really empower our team to be ambassadors, which drives professional development and innovation. We all share that passion – everywhere we go, we want to speak up and talk about how special TrueCare is so that, by the time we leave, everyone will know who we are and what our organization stands for. The whole team is really proud and passionate in that way,” said Tracy.

Tracy said this includes extensive, role-based training and dedicated professional development programs to ensure team members are not just keeping up, but leading the way in their respective fields.

The organization has invested in its own Organizational Development program and robust Leadership Development curriculum to build skills in every team member.

“You don’t just want to retain your talent. You want to grow your talent. We provide high levels of education to develop leaders, and we empower our team every day to bring their best, most talented selves to work, and leadership does the same. It’s just an unrivaled environment of support and growth,” said Tracy.

Looking forward, this commitment is most apparent in TrueCare’s proactive approach to new technologies like Artificial Intelligence.

“We’re in the midst of putting forward a formal plan for a strategy around what we’re calling our Role Evolution Roadmap. It’s not about replacing people ever, which is becoming more of a talking point with AI. Rather, it’s about elevating and upskilling the workforce – it’s about using that technology as a way to hone your craft. That will not only help them here, but will help them anywhere else they plan to go. We want to prepare everyone for their future, whether that’s with us or somewhere else. That’s the true definition of investing in your workforce – it’s unconditional,” said Tracy.

What’s TrueCare’s Culture of Innovation Like?

The powerful mission of community health care attracts a certain kind of person, and that is what Tracy Elmer credits most for TrueCare’s unique culture of innovation. It is a culture defined by trust and an overwhelming willingness to change.

“What makes TrueCare special is that our culture is really strong and resonates pretty consistently across locations, so the culture of innovation is consistent, too. But different communities and patient populations have different needs, so different locations might be driven to create different solutions. Every site comes up with great ideas,” beamed Tracy.

She said that the people themselves are the linchpin of innovation at TrueCare.

“It’s the people here that elevate our organization. There’s this spirit of innovation that lives in every single individual who works at TrueCare. Everyone starts from a place of ‘yes.’ There’s no resistance. There’s just a willingness to work and partner with us on anything we want to try, and there’s so much trust. Trust is key. Without that, innovation and improvement are kind of impossible. We’ve built a lot of trust equity with intention,” said Tracy.

TrueCare is an organization that actively fights against what they refer to as “silent suffering,” a culture that encourages team members to report problems rather than silently dealing with them. No matter what you’re dealing with, you have a team behind you.

Tracy also made the point of saying that innovation doesn’t have to be technology-centric.

“A good example is that, several years ago, we were trying to improve quality, that’s always a focus, but we knew with our Epic implementation, we were going to take a bit of a hit. That always happens with any kind of major change to workflows. We worked with Perris to design this quality ambassador program. We tested it there, and everyone was so helpful. It’s been hugely successful, and our outcomes show that our interventions and all the changes, data, ambassadors, and quality scores have improved dramatically year-over-year, which is what it’s all about – it’s really cool to see. Innovation will also look like translation tools because we have a lot of Spanish-speaking patients. It’s a balance between innovative technology and innovative processes, at the end of the day,” said Tracy.

This commitment to being open, trusting, and proactive ensures that every single team member is part of the solution.

“People here just think differently – it’s a mindset that’s all about yes, we’re in it until it doesn’t work. Until the wheels fall off. Then, we make a pit stop, see what happened, put them back on, and keep on trucking. They also start from a place of trust, or at least alignment, that they’ll get there through time and testing. Everyone is in it, and everyone plays a part. It’s a team sport. We really do try to be solution partners and strategists as opposed to change deliverers – we don’t just enforce change,” smiled Tracy.

What Inspired You to Join Community Health Care?

Kenya’s choice to work at TrueCare is rooted in her experience as a patient. For her, working as an MA in a community health center is a direct way to give back to the place that cared for her and her family.

“I joined because I was a patient as well in the clinic here, and I enjoy being able to help others, especially with translating. That’s important because we have a lot of patients who need that. It’s a great feeling,” smiled Kenya.

By assisting with translation, Kenya says that she is proud to help break down critical barriers to care for the community, making it as accessible as it should always be.

“I love the care that was given to me as a kid and my family members as well. And just seeing how much TrueCare really cares about their patients made me want to join the team – I experienced the difference we make firsthand on the patient side,” said Kenya.

What Makes the TrueCare QuickCare Team Unique?

TrueCare’s QuickCare location is defined by its small, ambitious, and fast-paced environment. According to Kenya, this dynamic atmosphere keeps the work engaging and the day moving quickly.

“I like that there’s an X-ray here, and it’s in good condition. It makes it easier on our end with patients. And I’m only 15 minutes away, so I like that it’s close. The freeway’s right there, and everything’s nearby – it’s really a fantastic location. We are a small team, but it’s nice. It’s a fast pace, and the time goes by quickly. There’s never a dull moment,” Kenya explained.

When asked to describe the group? She chose one word: “ambitious.”

Beyond the fast pace, it’s the relationships that make the team special. TrueCare cultivates an environment where team members feel supported, creating a true sense of family. Kenya credits her partner, Brianna, as a key component of her support system.

“I would say my partner, with whom I’m always working, Brianna, is really amazing. She’s really smart, outgoing, driven, and eager to learn more since she’s brand new to the team. She just really loves learning, and she’s a hard worker, and those are two qualities that are really important to have if you want to succeed here,” beamed Kenya.

The commitment to patient care is also visible in the facilities.

“Something I love about this location is we have state-of-the-art equipment here, and we are eager and excited to have a new team member join to assist with that so we can help our patients faster as well,” she said.

Kenya also said that she’s in the Building Great Relationships (BGR) team, so she helps facilitate some of the culture-building activities, from celebrating birthdays and passing out cards to celebrating National Nurse Week.

“We love to get together every month and see what we can do. There are different days – like, just two days ago, it was National Guacamole Day, and we went and made guacamole. It was nice. Next week, it’s National Quesadilla Day, so we’re having a quesadilla bar, and all of us will bring different dishes. Amelda, for example, loves bringing lumpia – that’s my favorite. I just really enjoy it because it’s like we’re able to get together as a team and share ideas on what we can do. Everybody has their opinion, and we just combine them all into one. It’s nice that we’re able to come together and eat like a real family,” smiled Kenya.

For Kenya, her career at TrueCare is just beginning. After four years as an MA, she is eager to continue her professional journey, looking into options like LVN, RN, or even an HR setting, and she’s proud to pursue these goals within the TrueCare family.

“I’ve been working as an MA for the last four years, and I want to expand and learn more, maybe start working in different departments through TrueCare. I’ve had a little bit of experience in each department as an MA, but it would be nice to maybe get into an HR setting and do something new. I’m just up for a challenge all the time, and the leadership team here has been really supportive and really nurtured my growth,” said Kenya.

What keeps her with the organization is the company’s dedication to continuous education and development. TrueCare actively invests in its staff, providing regular training and meetings to ensure everyone is equipped to provide the highest level of care.

“I like the environment and what TrueCare stands for. It’s just a really great company, and there are always learning opportunities. I love that we constantly have meetings and training with Epic. We’re just always learning new things, and I love that. It’s always like a refresher every time we have our meetings. I like that TrueCare is very big on wanting us to help the community and be involved with providing different resources to educate patients and help them with MyChart. I’m able to assist the elderly patients there because they have a lot of issues using the phone and stuff, so it’s just really great that we’re able to get that kind of training,” Kenya shared.

For Dr. Claribel Jimenez, a chiropractor serving the Encinitas and Perris health centers, her career at TrueCare is the realization of a lifelong dream, one that literally brought her back to where she began. Dr. Jimenez grew up as a patient of TrueCare, formerly known as North County Health Services. Now, as a provider, she sees her younger self in every patient who walks through the door. This full-circle experience fuels her passion for community health care and instills every day on the job with unimaginable fulfillment.

Keep reading to learn more about Dr. Jiminez’s story in her own words!

A Full Circle Career: Dr. Claribel Jimenez on Finding Purpose and Family at TrueCare

Dr. Claribel Jimenez’s personal journey is what defines her approach to community health care. It’s a role that transcends providing treatment.

For Dr. Jimenez, it’s about fostering trust and cultural understanding, particularly for patients who have historically faced barriers to quality care. Her deep connection to the people she serves makes her a vital advocate for health equity within the TrueCare family.

“TrueCare is an amazing company. They care about their employees, and I would definitely recommend anyone who is looking for a job in the medical industry to come to TrueCare because we all care for each other, we’re all there for each other, and they care about you as a person, not just an employee. That’s truly special,” said Dr. Jimenez.

What’s a TrueCare Value that Aligns with You and Your Work?

Dr. Jimenez started the conversation by reflecting on the values that define TrueCare and the work she does with the organization.

“What really resonates with me the most is treating our patients to the fullest, treating them with respect, and giving them the care they need every time they come here. It’s really just about giving them my best every time they come, no matter what day it is, because that’s what each patient deserves,” said Dr. Jimenez.

Dr. Jimenez said she loves giving her patients a safe and comfortable space, too, especially as someone who is bilingual. Being able to speak Spanish adds an invaluable level of comfort and security for her patients.

“I really enjoy knowing my patients are comfortable coming to see me and that I will be able to communicate with them and understand their pain and concerns, and what they want and need from us as providers. Sometimes that language barrier is really hard for patients, and they don’t always end up being able to communicate everything they feel, so they don’t get the care they deserve and need. When you speak their language, it’s a lot easier, and they get that comfort from you. That’s one of the biggest differences you can make in their lives – providing them with a safe space,” said Dr. Jimenez.

What Does it Feel Like to Serve Your Own Community?

Dr. Jimenez’s background as a Hispanic patient, she re-emphasized, deeply informs the compassionate and culturally sensitive care she provides today – she says that she sees herself in her patients, and that makes the work all the more meaningful.

For many of her patients, especially those who are low-income or face language barriers, visiting a community health center is the most crucial step they can take toward well-being.

Her commitment to serving the underserved stems from her personal belief in the power of community health and the fundamental right to quality health care. For her, working at TrueCare is far more fulfilling than her previous experience in private practice.

What’s it Like Working at TrueCare?

Dr. Jimenez is fast approaching her second-year anniversary, a milestone we’re thrilled to celebrate with her, and she was happy to share her experience thus far. She feels immense pride coming into work every day because she knows firsthand the impact their care has.

“Honestly, my milestone of being here almost two years is crazy to me – it feels like it happened in the blink of an eye. I can’t even believe I’ve been here that long, but I am proud to say I work for Truecare. It’s just the most amazing company, and I grew up coming to TrueCare when it was North County,” said Dr. Jimenez.

Dr. Jimenez expanded on what it means to see herself reflected in her patients.

“So, when I was younger, I came here to get all my shots as a baby, and then having a full-circle moment and being a provider now, it’s like I see myself in every patient that comes in. They’re struggling, they’re having pain, and they need help. They might be low-income, and we deal with all kinds of ethnicities and races, so it’s just amazing to see how, growing up, I went here and felt the difference they make, and now I’m helping make that difference. I see myself in every patient that comes in because I grew up here, I’m Hispanic, and a lot of our patients are Hispanic. It just reminds me of when I used to come with my parents,” smiled Dr. Jimenez.

Dr. Jimenez compared her time spent in a private practice with her time at TrueCare, offering advice to those who might be interested in entering community health.

“It’s different, but it’s so rewarding. It’s rewarding when you’re in a private practice, but you’re seeing a different population of patients. Here, you see more of the people who can’t afford chiropractic or don’t even know about it. It’s really fulfilling to educate them. There are so many people who need your help, underprivileged people who can’t afford it, and are grateful that you are there. It’s incredible,” said Dr. Jimenez.

Regardless of which location you work at, Encinitas or Perris, Dr. Jimenez offered some reassurance that both are equally awesome.

“They treat patients beautifully and with respect, so it’s just nice to be around that, honestly. Perris has a really uplifting team and atmosphere, and they always have potlucks. I’m always saying, ‘I’m going to gain weight working here,’ and the same thing with Encinitas. They’re really welcoming and always have potlucks, too. They really go above and beyond to come up with ideas to celebrate – like Cookie Day, Cupcake Day, Salad Bar Day, or something like that. It’s always nice to be around that,” smiled Dr. Jimenez.

How Does TrueCare Foster Professional Growth for Providers?

Dr. Jimenez’s passion for chiropractic began when she received her first adjustment at age 16, after which she described being “on cloud nine.” This moment would prove to be an experience that immediately set her on a path to serve others.

That passion for learning hasn’t faded; at TrueCare, it’s supported by a robust culture of collaboration and continuous education. Unlike the “lone survivor” feeling of private practice, Dr. Jimenez enjoys the integration and support of her colleagues.

“When you have a team of other chiropractors, you can bounce off ideas, or if you have a question about something, you know, you can ask someone else who is in the same training as you. Iron sharpens iron – you help each other grow and improve,” Dr. Jimenez noted.

Dr. Jimenez noted specifically how important the support of her team is.

“I have a great team at both locations in Encinitas and in Perris. They are always so bright and positive every day, and when I’m feeling tired and exhausted from a long day, they’re always like, ‘You got this. The day is almost done. It’s midweek, or it’s Friday.’ I have this coworker in Perris, Judith, and she’s always smiling and happy. It brightens my day every time I see her. That’s an underrated aspect of growth – developing resilience through the support of your team,” shared Dr. Jimenez.

The entire chiropractic team holds regular meetings to share knowledge and discuss treatment techniques, ensuring all providers are equipped with the best possible skills. This is driven by the philosophy that you are always a student.

“Life is about constantly learning. You’re always a student, and there’s always something to learn. I’ve been in practice for almost 12 years, and I know I’ve learned a lot along the way. I’m always eager to teach others, too. I feel like what I’ve learned and discovered throughout my time as a chiropractor benefits everybody,” said Dr. Jimenez.

What Does it Mean to Show up Authentically at Work?

The foundation of TrueCare’s culture is a commitment to seeing and valuing every employee as an individual. Dr. Jimenez immediately felt this upon joining the organization.

“The onboarding experience here at TrueCare is amazing. I was very shocked to see how welcoming they are. It just felt like, ‘Okay, I’m in the right place,’ because of how the energy felt when coming into TrueCare,” remembered Dr. Jimenez fondly.

Dr. Jimenez also said that the vibe at TrueCare is truly like one big family, which makes everyone comfortable bringing their whole selves to work.

“It’s literally like a family at TrueCare. All the employees are like family, and we’re here for each other. We care about what you like and don’t like. And at some locations, they’ll ask about your birthday and what you like or don’t like, and then give you a basket just to celebrate you and who you are. That means a lot. Everyone really cares about you, who you are, and how authentically yourself you can be here,” said Dr. Jimenez.

As for what makes her feel at home with TrueCare? She was quick to give the team she works with props.

“What makes me feel at home here with everybody else is the fact that we’re all working toward the same goal – we are all here to help our patients and give them the care they need. We’re also friendly and welcoming, and every patient tells me the same thing, ‘Oh, you guys are awesome and welcoming. All the doctors are great.’ That means a lot to me and lets me know I’m where I need to be,” said Dr. Jimenez.

When asked what advice she’d give a candidate interviewing at TrueCare, Dr. Jimenez’s answer was simple: be you.

“Be yourself. Always be yourself because we are all different in different ways, but if you try to be a cookie-cutter, you won’t stand out. You have to stand out as who you are, not as who you think they want you to be,” Dr. Jimenez advised.

When it comes to your career, it’s not every day that you have the chance to do what you love and help the people and community you love the most in the process. But, for Edilberto “Eddie” Canseco, Physician Associate-Certified (PA-C), this dream-come-true has been his daily reality working at TrueCare. He has been dedicated to the health care field since he was 18, a passion sparked by wanting to do more for his own family. After years of working in private practice and the emergency department, he was looking for a role that offered both a deep connection to the community and a sustainable work-life balance.

Eddie found that unique opportunity at TrueCare’s La Mision health center. He shared how the supportive environment, integrated system of care, and deep satisfaction of giving back to his community have made TrueCare the perfect fit.

For Edilberto “Eddie” Canseco, practicing medicine is deeply personal, connecting his professional life to the community that shaped him. He was more than happy to share the motivation that led him to pursue a career in mission-driven health care.

What Inspired You to Work in Community Health Care?

Eddie Canseco‘s dedication to health care is rooted in a desire to serve those most in need, a motivation he felt from a young age.

“I’ve been in the health care field since I was 18 years old. I went to EMT school and never looked back. But what really inspired me was that, one time, I saw my dad sick, and I couldn’t do much about it, so I kind of wanted to know more and do more. That’s what led me into the field. I joined TrueCare about a year ago – I found the organization through social media and Indeed, and then I spoke to a few doctors working here, and they were all really nice, so that led me to come to work here,” said Eddie.

As for what stood out to him about the organization specifically, Eddie summarized it in one word – transparency.

“One of the things that led me to come to TrueCare after talking to some of the medical directors was that they were really honest and very transparent with working hours and the number of patients we see. It made me excited about everything, from the work to the growing opportunities to the work-life balance,” smiled Eddie.

This calling is why he feels such a connection to his current role at TrueCare, as he grew up in a similar underserved community that TrueCare (then North County Health Services) once served. Now, he’s able to give back to the neighborhood he knows.

“I was a patient of North County Health Services as a kid, and I remember my mom and dad bringing me to the one in San Marcos a lot. But I grew up in a similar, underserved community. TrueCare has helped me a lot, and now I’m on the other side, helping the community. It just makes me feel really good,” said Eddie.

What Is It Like to Practice Medicine at a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC)?

For providers used to other medical settings, the resources and mission of an FQHC can be surprising in the best way. Eddie found that TrueCare’s mission allows him to help every patient who walks through the door, regardless of their circumstances.

In fact, his experience at TrueCare is a stark contrast to his experience in the private sector.

“Before, I was working in a private practice and doing family medicine, but I worked in the emergency department, and I was working a lot of hours every week. So there was definitely a different pace and less of a work-life balance,” reflected Eddie.

He said that he loves being able to help patients, even if they don’t have insurance, and that it’s incredibly fulfilling to help communities that are too often underserved.

“We do have a lot of funding, and we are able to help patients, even patients who don’t have any sort of insurance. We are basically allowed to, for example, do a shave biopsy or a small procedure that, somewhere else, they’d be charged a lot of money for. But they’re able to come here to TrueCare, and we can help them out,” smiled Eddie.

This is, ultimately, his favorite part of working here.

“Being able to help anybody who walks through the door and provide them with the best care that we can feels so good. We also have a really good integrated system overall compared to other places I’ve worked. Every clinic has their own stuff, and glitches are going to happen everywhere, but from working at other places, I have found that we have one of the best ways to collaborate and provide integrated care,” said Eddie.

How Does TrueCare Support Providers?

Eddie had plenty of praise for the supportive atmosphere TrueCare has cultivated for providers and patients alike, starting with warm handoffs.

“Warm handoffs are really satisfying. For example, maybe someone needs to see a gynecologist or even a psychiatrist. Sometimes we get patients who need specific help like that, but we can’t provide it right there when they need it. That’s where warm handoffs come into play, so we can send patients right away to get the care they need,” smiled Eddie.

The other type of support that TrueCare offers providers, Eddie said, was the team that providers join when they come on board.

“Everybody here is really welcoming and nice. All the MAs, nurses, and doctors here are great, and I think we have a really strong team. I definitely see myself here long term. You have a team behind you here that you can always call on if you don’t feel comfortable, and that just amplifies our impact,” said Eddie.

As for how TrueCare supports growth, Eddie said that he feels like they are completely invested in his personal and professional development.

“I just got a scholarship for the Lifestyle Medicine program, so I’m currently doing that. I have the board exam at the end of November. Beyond that, the number of patients I keep seeing and the different ways it helps me grow better. I get better by helping them get better, so just connecting with patients is great,” smiled Eddie.

Why Is TrueCare a Great Place for New Providers to Start?

Eddie said that the onboarding process, in particular, was a great and supportive experience, and that new providers should look forward to it.

“The onboarding process was a few months, but that’s pretty normal. They were really supportive and allowed me to come into the clinic and meet everybody and see the way they work. The process is super transparent, so you see the amount of patience you’ll be working with throughout this process, the timing and hours you’ll work, and all of that. It’s not normal for organizations to be so upfront, but it really builds trust,” said Eddie.

He strongly recommends TrueCare for new graduates seeking a place to grow.

“You definitely have the support of the nurses, assistants, and doctors here. You can always ask them for help if you don’t feel comfortable. The support is really strong, and I think that for a new grad, especially, it will be something that they need because when you come out of school, you need people to bounce ideas off of, and you need to be able to talk to other providers and patients. Everybody here is pretty good about that and open-minded. This is really a perfect environment for a recent graduate,” said Eddie.

What Is the Greatest Source of Pride in Your Work?

Working in the community where he grew up gives Eddie a unique cultural understanding that he uses to better connect with and treat his patients. This deep connection is what drives his greatest sense of pride.

“One of the things that I really like is that, you know, I understand that patients are sometimes shy or scared to come to us, so I can help them out and make them feel comfortable about opening up about their medical problems. I see myself in them, so it’s easier for me to connect in that way,” smiled Eddie.

His personal background also informs his medical advice. For patients with diabetes, for example, he’s able to understand why diet changes are hard.

“I  know about their diet and socioeconomic situations because I come from the same environment. For example, we get diabetic patients, and sometimes it’s harder to change their diet because it’s just the way they were raised. It’s their culture. I’m able to understand that because I come from that culture, too,” reflected Eddie.

For Eddie, the best feeling, however, is seeing long-term results.

“When I go home and I actually talk to my wife about, ‘Oh yeah, you know, I was able to help this patient get his numbers down or, you know, improve his blood pressure,” added Eddie.

Eddie said that, compared to where he was 10 years ago, he’s very proud to be at TrueCare.

“I’m really proud of where I’m at right now. Like I said, helping the patients I see and giving them answers is super fulfilling, but 10 years ago, maybe I was kind of in search of what I wanted to do or work in. Like I said, I worked in emergency medicine for about six or seven years, and at the same time, I was working in the clinic. But I’ve actually found that working in a place like this gives me the most satisfaction – I just love helping patients in the long term,” said Eddie.
